Ok so I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t care to see this movie. However Pixar rarely let’s me down, this is no exception! This movie really shows that, like Inside Out, emotions aren’t always bad. It also shows that you don’t have to be perfect for everyone, especially your family.
The characters in this film start out coming across kind of annoying and one note. This changes later on as the movie develops. Well for some characters anyways. The main characters of “Mei” and her mom “Ming” have a clear strict relationship that’s built on discipline and rule following. It shows later on the layers to them with Mei becoming more of herself and Ming accepting she has become like her own mother. The supporting characters of Mei’s friends are more one note, even as the story continues. The father is rarely heard from but you can tell he loves his family and wants them to be themselves.
Setting the movie in Toronto, Canada we get to see many ethnicities which adds to the world they are building. Having the time being in early 2002 really shows with the flip phones, boy bands, and tamagotchis.
The plot revolves around being a young teen and the embarrassment that comes with it. You will feel the second hand embarrassment and will be cringing at these moments with the main character. There's also the issue of trying to please your family and live a second life. I myself as I feel most people at some point in their life can relate to that struggle, and if you can it will drag you more into the story this movie has set.
Pixar packs an emotion punch with this film! You feel every embarrassing moment, every tear shed, and every joyful laugh. For anyone who feels like they have to hide their true selfs from their family, this movie is for you! I’d have to give this family movie a solid 7/10. I think while I enjoyed this movie, the film suffered from one note characters and over the top ending. If you love Pixar then you’ll love this film.
