The Batman

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

"Wow. Just wow." Those are the words that left my mouth after the movie ended. This movie was everything I wanted and more! From the cast, to the set design, to the score, everything about this movie SCREAMS Batman! If you weren't sure if you should see this film, this critic highly recommends you do. The Batman is a great paced detective noir film that really explores the psyche of Batman. This is a Non-Spoiler review. If you want to hear spoilers and my full thoughts, look out for the new episode of Film Obsessed on Sunday morning.

I'll start with the cast and the acting. These actors really disappear into their respective roles. The cast is probably one of the biggest highlights of the film, anyone who doubted Robert Pattinson will be very surprised because HE IS BATMAN. He really brings the whole vibe of the character to his acting style. Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman steals every scene she's in. I'm sorry Michelle Pfeiffer but there's a new cat in town and she brought her A-game! Paul Dano's Riddler was very unsettling in the best way, you really get scared of his green mask and who's behind it. Jeffery Wright (Jim Gordon), Collin Farrell (The Penguin), and Andy Serkis (Alfred) all played their supporting roles with great care and respect to the source material.

The set and score really set the tone for this universe. The movie is almost horror like. This feels like the crime ridden Gotham you hear about, it's dark, bitter, and bleak. Hopeless some would say. The cinematography was grim but in the best way! All the lighting amongst the dark, rainy, foggy setting really drives home the setting. The score is great, nothing else to say about it. In terms of Batsuits, it's probably my second favorite after Afflecks. The vehicles and gadgets are unique and are utilized in unique ways.

I think the thing this movie does best is fully understanding who Batman is. How Bruce Wayne is Batman's mask, not the other way around. His psyche is on full display, the messed up mentality he has towards crime. Batman is crazy, anyone who thinks he's sane really doesn't know the character. All the characters even realize it at one point or another.

In summary I would give this movie a 9/10. I would argue it's the best Batman film, sorry The Dark Knight. Hopefully this Batman and universe will stick around longer than the previous. With all the spin-offs and sequels they've announced I think my wishes will come true! Matt Reeves is a genius who really understands who Batman is and how he works. As I said before, go see this movie and subscribe to the podcast to hear my in depth spoiler review on Sunday.
